Frequently Asked Questions

What is Debate Companion?
Debate Companion is an iPhone and iPad app that lets you watch — or participate in — live spoken debates between AI personas powered by Apple Intelligence. You can pick any two of six iconic debating characters, choose a topic, and watch (or join) a real-time argument unfold with full voice playback.
What device and iOS version do I need?
RequirementMinimum
DeviceiPhone or iPad with Apple Intelligence support
iOS / iPadOSiOS 26.0 or later (required for FoundationModels API)
Apple IntelligenceMust be enabled in Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri

Apple Intelligence (available since iOS 18.1) is supported on: iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, all iPhone 16 models and later, iPad mini (A17 Pro), and all iPad Pro / iPad Air models with M1 or later. Debate Companion additionally requires iOS 26 for the FoundationModels API.

Does the app require an internet connection?
No. All AI processing — debates, moderator analysis, and topic suggestions — runs on-device via Apple Intelligence FoundationModels. The app works completely offline with no Wi-Fi or cellular required.
What is the Premium unlock and how much does it cost?
Premium is a one-time purchase of $2.99 USD. It unlocks: AI vs You debate mode, all four premium personas (Philosopher, Pragmatist, Visionary, Devil's Advocate), the moderator conclusion after each debate, up to 10 debate rounds (vs. 2 for free), unlimited debate history, and the Re-Debate feature. There is no subscription or recurring charge.
How do I restore my Premium purchase on a new device?
Go to Settings inside the app and tap "Restore Purchases." As long as you are signed in with the same Apple ID you used to purchase, Premium will be restored at no charge.
How do I participate in a debate instead of just watching?
Enable the "AI vs You" mode from the home screen (requires Premium). You'll take the place of one of the debaters — type or speak your argument and the AI persona will respond to your point directly and continue the debate.
Can I choose the voices for each participant?
Yes. In Settings → Voice Settings you can independently select the voice for Agent A, Agent B, and the Moderator from the Apple Voices available on your device. Make sure you have downloaded the voices you want to use — go to Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices to download higher-quality voices.
How many debate rounds can I set?
Free users can set 1–2 rounds. Premium users can set 1–10 rounds per debate.
How many debates are saved in history?
Free accounts save the 3 most recent debates. Premium unlocks unlimited history (up to 1,000 debates on-device).
What does "Re-Debate" do?
Re-Debate (Premium) lets you instantly replay any saved debate with the same configuration — same topic, same personas, same round count — generating a brand-new set of arguments.
The AI debate response seems off-topic or refused to engage. What should I do?
Apple Intelligence has built-in content guidelines that occasionally cause refusals on sensitive topics. Try rephrasing your topic to be more specific and debate-oriented (e.g., "Should nuclear energy replace fossil fuels?" rather than a broad political statement). If the issue persists, contact support with the topic text so we can investigate.
The voice isn't speaking during debates. How do I fix this?
Make sure your device is not on Silent mode and that the volume is turned up. In app Settings, check that your Playback Mode is set to "Voice + Reveal" (not "Text Only"). If a voice is missing, go to iOS Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices and download the voice you've selected in the app.
How do I delete a saved debate?
In the History tab, swipe left on any debate card and tap Delete, or use the Edit button in the top-right corner to select and remove multiple debates at once.
I have a feature request. How do I submit it?
We'd love to hear your ideas. Email us at debatecompanion@gmail.com with the subject line "Feature Request" and a description of what you'd like to see.
